MacRitchie monkey update

October 29, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Apparantly, the monkeys in MacRitchie Park have attracted quite an attention from some people recently. An undergrad was reported unconcious after an accident in which he tried to avoid hitting a monkey with his car in an area not too far from MacRitchie Park. Last I heard, he was still in coma. Some residents who live near the MacRitchie Park had written to The Straits Times complaining about the dangers and nuisance they’ve had to bear with the infamously aggressive MacRitchie monkeys. After my brush with the monkeys the last time I visited the place, I think I have an inkling of how the residents must’ve felt when faced with some monkey situation.

One most likely reason those monkeys become unusually agressive is due to the feeding they received from park users who do not heed the park guidelines. Now that it has come to this point, even if animal feeding can be successfully stopped, what will stop the existing monkeys from hurting someone? It is also more likely that a violent monkey breeds a series of violent monkeys. Afterall, monkeys see, monkeys do.

Do be careful.
